Stella Smith MBBS, FRCS is a Consultant General and Colorectal Surgeon in Manchester with a trauma background. She undertook two post CCT-Fellowships in Major Trauma in the UK and South Africa. These fellowships provided her with a wealth of experience managing major trauma patients, especially those with penetrating trauma. In 2019, Stella helped to reconfigure and rejuvenate the Major Trauma Service in Manchester Royal Infirmary, Manchester, UK. She is the Clinical Lead for the Major Trauma Service and works works with the Greater Manchester Major Trauma Network. Stella has a humanitarian interest and, in 2019, has been on call for the UK Emergency Medical Team to deploy to areas of natural disaster on behalf of the Department for International Development.
Ian Tyrrell-Marsh MBChB, FRCA, FIMC, DipIMM, DipIMC is a Consultant in Prehospital care, Anaesthetics and Intensive Care Medicine in the North-West. He has extensive experience in trauma care, working at a busy MTC in Manchester and having completed secondments with London HEMS, Essex and Herts Air Ambulance then working for The Air Ambulance Service. He currently works with the North-West Air Ambulance as part of their Senior Medical Team. He has interests in all-things resuscitation, Human Factors and DIY.
Simon Carley DipIMC, FAcadMed, FRCEM, MPhil, MD, PhD is a Consultant in adult and paediatric Emergency Medicine at Manchester Foundation Trust working in both adult and paediatric trauma centres. He is visiting Professor at Manchester Metropolitan University. He also volunteers in the prehospital setting with North West BASICS. He is co-founder of the BestBets website, St.Emlyn’s social media learning platforms and the MSc in emergency medicine at Manchester Metropolitan University. Jay Harrison, RN, PgCert, is the Quality Improvement Lead for the Greater Manchester Major Trauma
Network. She is particularly focused on working with hospitals in Greater Manchester to improve the delivery of Major Trauma care. Prior to this role she spent 20 years in ED nursing, with 7 years as a Senior Sister at a Major Trauma Centre delivering the trauma education programme.
Jay has developed and coordinated the regional level 1 Greater Manchester Trauma Intermediate Life Support Course. She has completed the NTACC, ETC, HMIMMS and Triage Instructor courses and is co-chair of the National MajorTrauma Nursing Group Education Committee. Jay has a particular interest in trauma education and frailty and has developed pathways of clinical care along with supporting resources that are utilised in hospitals across the North West.
Chris Knight RN, MSc, PgCert is an Advanced Clinical Practitioner with over 10 years’ experience in Major Trauma across three Trauma Centre’s in the North West. He is passionate about post-resuscitation trauma care and delivering trauma specific education to ward nurses. Chris is co-chair of the National Major Trauma Nursing Group Education Committee and aims to make trauma training accessible to all nurses and allied health professionals working with trauma patients.
